Grocery Update - Week 1

Grocery and week 1 update! I wanted to come back to this and post the price of groceries and things we bought this week, here are the essentials that we bought to fulfill our macros:

2 packs of chicken breast ($16.35, $14.69) = $31.04

Rice ($6.79) = $6.79

2 Packs of Tofu ($2.98 each) = $5.96

2 Blocks of Cheddar Cheese ($5.99 each) = $11.98

Total groceries: $55.77

A little side note, we bought tofu for me and chicken for Joe, which is why you see two sources of protein there instead of just one. We also bought additional groceries to make pico but those were all vegetables (tomatoes, celery, onions, jalapenos, cilantro), adding that all up it was <$20 for the week and because it doesn’t make any change to our macros and barely any to our budget I won’t list them out here.

Week 1, we’re just at the beginning. We got back from AU late Friday evening and since then have unpacked, picked up the dog, and went grocery shopping. And then we slept, at least I slept for hours and hours :) Jet lag is a tough one and clearly its effecting me more than Joe because right now I’m laying down on the sofa while he’s up doing everything else. But this is also the first two days without our beloved ‘cheat meals’ or meals we have once a week where we do not count our macros. And since we’re getting back from vacation and having cheat meals every day, we’re not feeling the pain and urge yet to eat all the chocolate, hamburger, pizza things. I’m sure that’ll change! As of now, we’re doing well and eating our meals. As of today and yesterday (and for the upcoming week) our meals are primarily one cup of rice, with chicken/tofu, and slices of cheese. Sounds like its limiting and you’re right because it is. We’re keeping to our macros and according to science this is what is enough for us to maintain weight and give our bodies enough nutrients to workout and go about daily activities. Joe and I have survived for years on following macros and to us it actually feels better to eat this way than any other way we’ve tried before. I’ll keep this page posted as we continue on throughout these next 11 weeks of a challenge!

And why did I post a photo of a coffee for this post? Honestly, I didn’t have any other photos that I felt were good enough. I thought a pizza would be fun but the pizza pictures I do have just make me hungry. And coffee is something we can always have, so this coffee photo from a year ago when we visited Sydney the first time was the best thing I thought of putting up :)

End of week 1 update:

Wanted to bring back a week 1 update and let everyone know how the week went! We did go back to the grocery store and I’ll document what we bought here. We ran out of a few things and had to replenish, so here is the list of what we bought:

Rice = $6.79

2 Blocks of Cheddar Cheese = $14.98

2 Packs of Chicken breast ($13.39, $13.17) = $26.56

Pico ingredients = $15.97

Dog food x 2 = $41.98

Soup x 2 ($2.99) = $5.98

Total: $112.10

This means the total of week 1 was: $167.87 in groceries. Other expenses were a coffee that I bought today for $2.29. Our total was $170.16 for week 1! This is exciting stuff, we spent less than $200 the first week and we’ll keep you updated as the weeks continue. In terms of food, we have been pretty good on eating the same things, I had one exception where I am eating soup as well because I am feeling pretty sick and I love soup when I’m sick. It didn’t add much to our grocery shopping and doesn’t add much to my macro tracking. We’re starting off well! Happy about it! At the end of the month (or I guess after 4 weeks) I will be sure to update everyone on how much we saved too.
