I’ve been thinking a lot lately, about what it means to be a parent. What it means to be a mother. It’s been a whole new identity shift. I thought of how some people try to get back to who they were before they had kids, and others simply embrace the new person they’ve become. Although I don’t think you can really get back to being the person you were before, time traveling to the past is impossible for now. I guess in parenthood you are becoming a new person all the time, you no longer have the time to do the things you used to do, if you’re like me then your days are very structured and you probably rarely have any time for yourself and your old thoughts or habits or hobbies. Which is truly a struggle. I’ve read a few books about babies and kids but I haven’t read one about how to get back to feeling like ‘me’ after having a baby. I don’t think I have any real tips or tricks this time around because I am also figuring it out as I go. I’ve found reading books helps me, baking recipes like breads and cakes has helped, and finding time to go for a run/workout has helped me refocus on myself. Sometimes, honestly, even going to work makes me feel more like myself again because it’s something I can call my own.
All this to say that if you’re struggling through parenthood, you’re not alone at all. I’m right there with you, cheering you onward as you continue to be the hero your child needs. We’ll figure this all out together in time, and I have full faith that one day this will all make sense and this time will be a time of evolution.
This week my mom came in from Canada to visit us, we had a great time with her while she visited for the two days she was here. It was nice having someone else in the house besides us, and it was nice seeing Sophie have so much fun. Sophie loves her grandma to bits, and it was very clear to see that with all their interactions.
We did so much touring around this week!! First three snips from our video above are from Discovery Park, we visited Discovery a few times this weekend to walk and hike and also go on the playground for playdates. We also went around South Lake Union which is clip 4 of me showing my mom how the video camera works. Clip five is at the zoo looking at reptiles!! Clip six is at Ba Bar in U Village, and the last clip is of Sophie with her new bubble machine (thanks to grandma!) and us going for a walk around the neighborhood!!
